Top 10 Christmas Carols

Let the debate begin! Below is my subjective list of favorites, with videos of good to great renditions of each. I have also included my favorite line(s) of each song:

THE TOP 10 CHRISTMAS CAROLS

10 - Coventry Carol

O sisters, too, how may we do,
For to preserve this day;
This poor Youngling for whom we sing,
By, by, lully, lullay.

9 - Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming
Favorite line(s):
To show God's love aright,
 she bore to us a Savior,
 when half spent was the night.

Favorite line(s):
No more let sins and sorrows grow,
nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessing flow
far as the curse is found,

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

6 - Silent Night
Favorite line(s):
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar

Until the Son of God appear

Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity

2 - Once In Royal David's City
Favorite line(s):
For He is our childhood's pattern;
Day by day, like us, He grew;
He was little, weak, and helpless,
Tears and smiles, like us He knew;
And He cares when we are sad,
And he shares when we are glad.

1 - O Holy Night
Favorite line(s):
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!

  1. I *love* "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence"! My favorite part is the verse that just ends with alleluias. Good times.

  2. I LOVE O Holy Night, and Josh Groban's voice is truly inspired by God. I have a different favorite line though. It comes from the 3rd verse (which this version unfortunately shortens):

    Truly He taught us to love one another,
    His law is love, and His gospel is peace.
    Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother,
    And in His name, all oppression shall cease.

    What a glorious day THAT will be!

    Then tolled the bells more loud and deep: "God is not dead, nor does He sleep! The wrong shall fail! The right prevail! For peace on earth, goodwill to man."

  4. I'd like to add In the Bleak Midwinter. Favorite line:

    "But only His mother,
    in her maiden bliss
    Worshipped the Beloved
    with a kiss."
