Tongues, etc. are a part of the Church's history, but not her Tradition. We have the Sacraments and great, authentic gifts that have sustained the Church for milennia. We do not need warmed over 19th century American Pentecostalism. While converts are welcomed and bring much new life and zeal into the Church, they should check dubious protestant practices such as tongues at the door.
Bless you guys! I have been part of the Charismatic Renewal Movement since i was a teen. It has really transformed many lives and built up and helped move the Church back toward its roots. I think you will find as many of the older preists are retiring they are being replaced by many young men from Charismatic Families! Our CHarismatic Community here has three young men in Seminary now. Alleluia! Welcome Welcome Welcome! to the Catholic Church!
Speaking in tongues is *not* an exclusively "Protestant practice".
"Speaking in tongues simply means the ability to speak and be understood by all"--well, I think it is a bit more than *that*. When I switch to Spanish in a Latino community, no one tells me I'm speaking in tongues.

The use of the term "the gift of language" rather the "the gift of tongues" would be less confusing.
